Thanks for posting the links. One question, however, about the Anandtech
review. Why does the writer think that a a micro-op is only one byte long,
and see the 64 KByte AMD instruction cache as necessarily larger than the
Intel 12 Kmicro-op cache? As far as I know, the rest of the review may be
spot on, but this item does make me wonder.

Who needs a review? I've had one for over a fortnight. The architecture
might make sense once it hits the 4.5GHz or so area and there's software
around with SSE3 support, but right now, Northwood is a better bet IMVHO.

What really astonishes me is that they also release a 533MHz 2.8E Prescott
without HT. What's the point -- for machines that can't do faster than
133MHz bus speed, the Northwood 2.8 and 3.06HT are faster -- the latter
quite a bit faster, and at about the same price.
Unless SSE3 makes a *gargantuan* impact, I can't imagine any value
whatsoever in the more power-hungry and slower Prescott 2.8E.

Prescott is best read as capability & economics:
o Capability - architecture change allows higher clock than Northwood
o Economics - die-shrinkage allows more per unit area, lower cost, etc
The real change will be later this year; BTX, new-socket, new RAM,
new PCI-X bus, and probably gigabit on most boards re net-u/g-pull.
Oh, and 100W+ per CPU, which will make dual boxes cosey.
Then after that, probably a clock/watt improvement as usual.
Lower your costs to allow aggressive price-cutting if need be, so get
people into the P4 Prescot platform quickly soaking up the floaters,
the early adopters and the upgraders. Then obsolete it all out by new.

To add, the 103W of Prescott is the thermal avg/design,
the theoretical maximum is probably 15-20% higher - 120W.
In tests with the same cooler as the P4-N-3.2Ghz it was
found that the temp was 64-65oC vs 45oC for the former.
Hmmm, Intel is moving into the domestic consumer market
with objective of displacing George Foreman's grilling machine.

Can't wait to see a rack of dual-Prescot-Xeon's in 1U...

Inert liquid immersion with liquid nitrogen cooling assist?
I can't wait to see what happens when they put one of these in a laptop.
Oh, sorry, I forgot that the industry renamed them "notebooks" because of a
lawsuit where someone got burnt... Anyhow, that won't happen now, because
the power consumption is so high that the battery gives out before you
scorch yourself. This is called progress.
